Scalp Pain

The scalp consists of the greater, lesser, and the third occipital nerve. The greater and the lesser occipital nerve comes directly off the brain to go to the scalp while the third occipital nerve comes off the spinal cord in the neck to go to the scalp. Irritation of any one of these nerves, including because of spasms of the muscles along the way, can cause a burning or “shooting” pain of the scalp. This pain can be very intrusive, affecting your daily life. Sometimes the nerves become sensitive, which can make it difficult to wear a hat or lie in bed.

Headache Pain

Headaches are a painful sensation in any part of the head. They may range from sharp to dull and occur with other symptoms.

Treatment

Treatments for headaches is often very complex, most interventions require medication. The key to choosing the right medication (with the least side effects possible) is  understanding the specifics of your pain. Headaches are often associated with neck pain. In these cases, we focus on interventions of the neck in addition to the medications for treating the headaches.

Facial Pain

Facial Pain is usually caused by trauma but can be caused by any occurrence where the muscles, skin, or nerves are irritated.

Treatment

There several options available to treat facial pain. First, we may use superficial injections to the surface nerves and creams to provide relief.

If ineffective, we may recommend a sphenopalatine ganglion block during which we deliver lidocaine through the nose into the back of the nose, where the nerves of your face meet, and a gasserian nerve block, where we are able to inject the nerves as they exit the brain.

If needed, a final option could be to designate your care to a neurosurgeon who can isolate the nerve that is causing your pain depending on very specific MRI findings. Facial pain can be one of the most difficult sources of pain to treat so we take a stepwise approach to help you in the most comfortable way for you.

K. McCall

"I cannot recommend Dr. Pulikal and his team enough. It is rare to find a team that cares as much as these people do about the outcome of their patients. Truly a treasure of a clinic.

Amber Larsen

"I had lost hope in the medical system. If you have pain and are in need of care, and you're reading this, please do yourself a favor and schedule an appointment. I can't recommend Dr. Adi enough.
